Intervista a bsdpunk

Oggi intervistiamo un personaggio che, a differenza di molti, crede che la scena underground sia ancora attiva, e la cosa non può che farmi piacere . Parliamo di bsdpunk, editor del blog omonimo e co-fondatore della community di scrittori di malware Malvager.

1 – Ok, cominciamo. Chi sei, da dove vieni, quanti anni hai? Sai, la solita roba per cominciare un’intervista
Compirò 24 anni il 16 di settembre se vuoi farmi un regalo.
2 – Com’è nato il blog bsdpunk?
Avvevo appena lasciato il mio secondo lavoro nella carriera IT, dopo che ero stato lì per circa 7 mesi. Ho cominciato ad avvertirli che l’infrastruttura era progettata male e che prima di tutto bisognava mettere l’equipaggiamento, ma nessuno mi ha ascoltato. Ho messo tutto me stesso in questo lavoro e mi piaceva perché anche se per metà del tempo facevo supporto desktop, l’altra metà la passavo su network e server.Era la prima volta che usavo un bel router (cisco 7606), non solo per un setup iniziale o per far pratica, ma una notte mentre passavamo da una T 1(approssimativamente 3mbs) ad una metroethernet(10mbs spremibile fino a 100mb),tutto l’equipaggiamento, che li avevo avvertiti si sarebbe rotto, si è rotto. Sono rimasto per un altro mese ma il lavoro era diventato un incubo da 80 ore la settimana. Quindi sono entrato e mi sono licenziato quello stesso mese. Il periodo tra questo lavoro e quello successivo è stato abbastanza bello quindi nel mio tempo libero ho deciso di iniziare il blog. 3 -Come nasce Malvager?
Praticamente Fallen che è parte della mia non ufficiale crew senza nome, mi disse di voler creare un forum sul malware.Ho pensato che sarebbe stato fantastico e mi ha chiesto di aiutarlo a farlo girare.
4 – Come hai cominciato a interessarti di malware?
Stavo cazzeggiando per creare un Bot IRC, per salutare e conoscere gente nuova sul nostro primo server ( 9unkz0r.com ) . Insomma un giorno stavo fissando il codice e pensavo ‘Però, se con questo coso potessi lanciare comandi al computer, sarebbe un bel tool di amministrazione…” E il resto, come si dice, è storia.
5 – Come vedi l’underground oggigiorno? Sempre che pensi esista ancora
La scena è viva e vegeta… almeno in internet. È molto più difficile trovare gente vicina. Ho provato ad incoraggiare la creazione di una scena, tramite outing, a Nashville c’è qualche meeting del 2600, ma può essere intimidente andarci. Quindi se hai un po’ di soldi, consiglierei di fare in relax un outing per incoraggiare la crescita della scena, non solo su internet.
6 – C’è qualcos’altro che vuoi dire?
Ho apprezzato che tu abbia voluto intervistarmi, e vorrei chiedere a quelli che hanno fondi e/o creatività, di diventare patriarchi/matriarche della scena. La nostra cultura si sta arricchendo in molti modi (ie nerdcore), però si sta mischiando in cose meno pure (http://bsdpunk.blogspot.com/2008/12/theft-most-grevious.html) ed ha bisogno di essere salvata.

1 – Ok, let’s start. Who are you, where are you from, how old are you? you know, usual stuff to start an interview
I am 24 years old september 16th if you want to send me some presents.
2 – How was bsdpunk blog born?
I had just left my second career IT job, for about 7 months I was there. I started warning them that the infrastructure was designed poorly and the equipment needed to be placed on top of that, but no one listened. I poured a lot of myself into the job and liked it there because even though half the time I was doing desktop support, the other half I was rockin the network and servers. It was my first time using a really nice router(cisco 7606), not just for an initial setup or just for training, but one night when we were switching from a bonded T1(approx 3mbs) to metroethernet(10mbs burstable to 100mb), every piece of equipment, that I warned would fail, failed. I stayed on for another month but the job became an 80 hour nightmare. So I came in and quit that month. The period between that job, until the next job was quite great so in my spare time I decided to start the blog.
3 – How was Malvager born?
Basically Fallen who is a part of my unofficial nameless crew, said he wanted to make a malware forum. I thought it would be awesome and he asked me to partner up with him to getting it running.
4 – How did you get interested in malware?
I was messing around with making an irc bot, to greet and meet new people on our original irc server ( 9unkz0r.com ) . And I was staring at the code one day and I was thinking you know if you could throw a command to the computer on this thing, that would be a neat administration tool….and the rest as they say is history.
5 – How do you see the underground these days? If you think it still exists, of course
The scene is alive and well…on the internet, it’s a lot harder to find locals. I have found and try to encourage, the creation of the scene, by having outings, in Nashville there are some 2600 meetings, but it can be intimidating to go to those. So if you have a little cash, I encourage throwing kind of a no stress outing to encourage the scene to grow, not just on the internet.
6 – Is there anything else you want to say?
I appreciate your intrest in interviewing me, and I want to ask for those with the funds and or creativity, to become patriarchs/matriarchs of the scene, our culture is becoming rich in many diffrent ways(ie nerdcore), however it’s amalgamating into things that are less pure(http://bsdpunk.blogspot.com/2008/12/theft-most-grevious.html) and needs to be saved.

Come anticipato qualche post fa, sono riuscito ad ottenere una breve intervista con VirusBuster, ex leader di 29A, ora sciolta. Riporto prima la versione in italiano e poi, per completezza, quella originale in inglese.

1) Tu sei stato il primo e l’ultimo membro del gruppo virus 29A (l’alfa e l’omega hai detto). Quando e perché si è formato 29A?

È stato fondato nel 1996 da alcuni membri di un BBS sui virus chiamata Dark Node, gestita da Gordon Shumway e me, VirusBuster.

Avevamo alcune cose (articoli, virus) e Mister Sandman pensò che sarebbe stata una buona idea mettere le cose migliori insieme in un virus magazine. L’idea di creare un gruppo è arrivata dopo quella del magazine poiché abbiamo preteso di continuare a rilasciare magazine, quindi sembrò naturale creare un gruppo per questo motivo.

2) Quanti virus sono stati prodotti da 29A? E quanti sono stati diffusi?

Quanti? Non ne ho idea, basterebbe leggere i 29A magazine e contarli.

Non so quanti ne siano stati diffusi.

3) Alcuni pensano che i produttori di antivirus diffondano i virus in rete per aumentare i propri profitti. Cosa ne pensi?

Non penso che le aziende produttrici di antivirus diffondano virus in rete. So che alcuni individui che lavorano per produttori di antivirus hanno creato e diffuso virus ma queste azioni non sono riconducibili alle aziende per le quali lavorano.

4) Qual è la tua opinione sul free software?

Sono io stesso un produttore di free software (VS2000 GUI, VS2000 console, StripLog, RenFiles e altri strumenti per collezionare virus) quindi penso che il free software sia una buona cosa quando è creato con passione e mantenuto adeguatamente fornendo supporto.

5) La scrittura di virus è ancora un’attività diffusa oggigiorno?

Non più, Gli anni d’oro della scrittura di virus sono andati. Oggigiorno si vedono solo gang che creano malware con i soldi come obiettivo. Questo non significa che di tanto in tanto qualcuno non crei nuovo malware con alcune tecniche nuove e interessanti.

6) Cosa stai facendo in questo periodo nell’ambito dei virus?

Gironzolo ancora nel canale IRC #vxers su Undernet giusto per tener viva la memoria della scena virus e incontrare di tanto in tanto vecchi amici, ma ora sono totalmente concentrato in un hobby che ho avuto per anni, collezionare virus.

1) You are the first and the last member of 29A virus group (the alpha and the omega you said). When and why 29A was formed?

It was formed during 1996 by some members from a vx related BBS named Dark Node, ruled by Gordon Shumway and me, VirusBuster.

We had some stuff (articles, viruses) and Mister Sandman thought it would be a good idea to put the best stuff together in a virus magazine. The idea of creating a group came after the idea of the magazine because we pretended to continue releasing magazines so it was natural to have a group for that purpose.

2) How many virus did 29A produce? And how many were spread in the wild?

How many? No idea, it´s just question of taking 29A magazines and counting them.

I don´t know how many were spreaded in the wild.

3) Someone thinks that antivirus producers spread virus in the net to increase profits. What do you think about this?

I don´t think any company spreads viruses in the net. I know that some individuals working for antivirus verdors have created and spreaded viruses but you can not link their actions to the companies they work for.

4) What’s you opinion about free software?

I´m myself a free software producer (VS2000 GUI, VS2000 console, StripLog, RenFiles and other virus collecting tools) so I think free software is good when it´s done with passion and it´s maintained properly giving support to it.

5) Is virus writing still a widespread activity today?

Not anymore, the golden years of virus writing are gone. Nowadays you just have gangs creating malware with money as objective. This doesn´t mean that from time to time someone doesn´t create a new malware with some new unique and interesting techniques.

6) What are you doing at the moment in the virus scene?

I still stay around #vxers IRC channel at Undernet just to keep alive the vx scene memory and meet from time to time with old buddies but now I´m totally focused in a hobby I´ve had for years, the virus collecting.
